V-6 adequate but don't rule out a more potent engine In future.
1-7-01 DODGE RAM QUAD CAB 4X4: Base price: Engine: 5.9-liter, V-8; Fuel economy: 11 m.p.g. city15 highway. First remake since the '94 debut. Not to mess with success, the bold look upfront is kept only the gaping chrome grille is even bigger. With 20-inch radials, there's more contact with the pavement for improved handling, but with those tires and firm suspension, ride is still "truck like." Four swing-out doors new, as are power adjustable pedals.
Larger cab-In with seats that flip back out of the way for cargo storage. Problems: raised hood affects depth perception when parking, and low mileage rating. 8-12-01 GMC ENVOY 4X4: Base price: Engine: 4.2-liter, Inline Fuel economy: 16 m.p.g. city21 highway. Old, compact Jimmy replaced by new longer, wider, taller midsize SUV.
Dimensions mean better road stance for improved ride and handling. Only a four-door. New inline 6-cylinder engine with lots more power if not any more mileage, though look for an even more potent engine soon as well as an even larger version with three rows of seats next spring and a bigger gas tank. 8-19-01 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED 4WD: Base price: Engine: 3.7-liter, V-6; Fuel economy: 16 m.p.g. city20 highway.
Larger, more rounded replacement for 18-year-old Cherokee. Choice of 2WD or 4WD. Unlike car-based SUVs, this one boasts on- or off-road capability. Initially only a V-6 offered, with good power but mileage you'd expect from a much bigger sport-ute. Decent suspension complemented by 16-inch radials, but rather stiff steering.
Novel second seats slide and fold as one piece to add cargo room. Rear door swings out. Massive head room front and rear once you slip in narrow rear-door opening.
