TUI Cruises enables further test drive before christening with the Mein Schiff 7: First cruise with guests from Kiel to Copenhagen and back to Kiel

Regular guests and cruise fans are eagerly waiting for the Mein Schiff 7 to start its first voyages. The demand for the christening voyage and the first test voyage was greater than the possibilities to fulfill everyone’s travel wishes. That’s why TUI Cruises has now made it possible and is offering anyone interested another test voyage. From 12 to 14 June, guests have the chance to get to know the newest member of the fleet before the official christening. The Mein Schiff 7 sails from Kiel to Copenhagen and back to Kiel.
The guests on the anticipation cruise have the great privilege of being the first to travel on the Mein Schiff 7. Of course, the usual premium all-inclusive concept of the Mein Schiff fleet awaits guests on this anticipation cruise. The crew is using this first trip with guests as a practice trip before the christening and will do everything to offer guests an unforgettable Mein Schiff feel-good experience. Nevertheless, there may be delays or minor deviations from the usual standard on this trip.
Following the sea trial last week, the Mein Schiff 7 is currently still at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, where the final work is being carried out, the ship is being loaded and prepared for the first guests. Just like the entire Mein Schiff fleet, the new build promises guests a very special feeling of well-being and premium travel at the very highest level.
Successful test voyage of Mein Schiff 7
Just a few weeks before the Mein Schiff 7 was put into service, the “Sea Trial” wassuccessfully completed. The new feel-good ship was put through its paces with the first part of the crew, shipyard employees and representatives of the classification society. The test run, and thus the ship’s first trip on the open sea, serves to test the ship’s performance and, in particular, maneuverability. In addition, there are many systems on board whose full functionality can only be tested during a deployment at sea.
During the sea trial of the Mein Schiff 7 last week, speed checks, anchor tests, emergency stop procedures, Z maneuvers and stabilizer tests were carried out, among other things. The lifeboat launching devices and the ship’s rudder machines were also tested. The highlight of the sea trial was the 360° turn. To do this, the two rudders are turned hard at full engine power – once to starboard, once to port. The ship is tilted by up to 7° and thus achieves a turning circle of 300 meters, which is impressive for a ship of this size.
“It is a very special experience to conduct a sea trial as a captain. Processes are tested and maneuvers are carried out that we do not do in normal operations,” says Mein Schiff shipyard captain Omar.
The Mein Schiff 7 will be able to run on methanol, or green methanol, from 2026.
The Mein Schiff 7 will initially be the first ship in the Mein Schiff fleet to run exclusively on low-emission marine diesel (sulfur content max. 0.1%) and is equipped with catalysts (nitrogen oxide reduction: around 75%) and a shore power connection. In addition, the Mein Schiff 7 will be built in such a way that it can also run on methanol, potentially green methanol, whichwill make the ship’s propulsion almost CO2-neutral.
For the commissioning of the Mein Schiff 7, all currently possible technical equipment, such as tanks and pipe systems for methanol or green methanol propulsion, have been installed. TUI Cruises is currently developing the missing technical component for the methanol drive of four-stroke engines, which does not yet exist. The shipping company plans for the Mein Schiff 7 to be equipped and commissioned in 2026 so that it can be one of the first cruise ships to run on methanol. “Methanol operation and thus a conversion is also an option for the future for the modern existing fleet. The Mein Schiff 7 plays a central role here in showing that this drive works in real ship operation. Based on these findings, we will decide on possible retrofitting,” says Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises.
