Spokane, East Custer, SD 57744, USA

For a South Dakota hike that is as beautiful as it is historic, there is no better place to be than Spokane; a once profitable mining town that was virtually deserted by the 1940s. While you will not come across any residents during your hike, you will find lots of well-preserved houses and buildings, plus a ton of other unexpected surprises! (Spokane can be found by taking Iron Mountain Road to Forest Service Rd 330, turning north, and looking for the marked Forest Service trail located shortly after the turn.)

What are some fun places to see in South Dakota?

With interesting rock formations, national and state parks, canyons, caves, and national landmarks to enjoy in South Dakota, there is something for everyone. Here are some fun places to see in South Dakota for your next trip:

  • Black Elk Peak, Black Hills, SD: As the highest point in South Dakota, Black Elk Peak has some of the best views in the state. It was formerly called Harney Peak after a U.S. Army officer in the 1800s. However, Harney was accused of crimes against Native Americans so the name of the peak was changed to Black Elk Peak in 2016 after a Lakota Indian elder.
  • World’s Largest Petrified Wood Park, Lemmon, SD: This is a fascinating park with odd statues made out of petrified wood — some are as tall as 20 feet. The whole park is only about a block long, but it is definitely worth a visit to see around 100 towers made entirely out of ancient petrified wood.
  • Wind Cave National Park, Custer. SD: This is a very unique cave system filled with interesting formations. It is one of the longest and most complex caves in the world. One of the most unique features is the honeycomb-shaped calcite formations. The park above ground is just as cool with bison, elk, and pronghorn antelopes running free.

With so many fun things to do and see in South Dakota, it isn't possible to do it justice with only a few items. Check out this list of 17 attractions to enjoy in South Dakota.
