21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (2024)

Bucharest has an emerging food scene. A local friend told me that five to six years ago most traditional Romanian restaurants focused solely on local or traditional food and that the trendy/fusion restaurants are something new to the city. Now, Bucharest’s amazing restaurants have a wide range of offerings, usually taking advantage of what’s fresh and seasonal and also a lot of international dishes being served around.

After recently spending more than a month eating my way through the city, I’ve compiled this list of the best restaurants in Bucharest. From Italian to seafood to local dishes with modern twists, Bucharest has tons of great options that will please anyone.

The 21 Best Bucharest Restaurants

Pâine si Vin

Str. Actor Ion Brezoianu 4,Sector 5

Pâine si Vin translates to bread and wine, which is quite literally the menu- different selections of crusts from around the world (served similar to flatbread pizzas) with your choice of toppings and an impressive selection of wines.

Crust choices include Roma (traditional pizza style), Flemish, Mexican Ember, Bengalese (naan bread), and Scandinavian. Each crust style is made complete with a variety of toppings sourced from local providers.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (1)

My favorite was the Mexican Ember crust topped with sour cream, sheep’s milk cheese, jalapeños, bacon, corn, red onion, chili flakes, and dill. I know it sounds like an interesting combination of ingredients but it was actually delicious. If you’re not feeling that adventurous you could instead try my second favorite- the Bengalese topped with hummus and spiced beef.

Caru’ cu bere

Strada Stavropoleos 5, București 030081 // +40726282373

Caru cu Bere (the beer wagon) is a restaurant and bar in Bucharest’s Lipscani district, built-in 1879 and moving to its current location in 1899, a gothic revival building designed by an Austrian architect Siegfrid Kofczinsky.

It is known for its interior decoration in the art nouveau style. It is operated by Dragoș Petrescu’s chain of City Grill restaurants and is considered a historical monument.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (3)

In this stunning location, you’ll find an exquisite restaurant set in a lovely building. It is A tremendous cultural space where you’ll see gold artwork and floral motifs adorning a rustic wood structure under a high ceiling. You will learn about a major part of Bucharest’s history in this cultural space.

There I ordered a bowl of cold meats and accompaniments: local sausages, cheese from Romania, spring onion, telemea cheese, liverwurst, kalamata olives, tomatoes, and pork fat. I enjoyed every bit of it!

This restaurant is a great choice if you would like to get a taste of Bucharest at its finest along with some history!

Gastronomika

Viitorului 34,District 2 // +40 21 230 3032

The delicious food at Gastronomika was some of the best I had while in Bucharest. The restaurant is gorgeous, and the atmosphere is cozy yet upscale at the same time. It’s one of the best places for a romantic date!

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (4)

The owner is an incredible host and even kept the restaurant open and the wine flowing late when our group dinner ran long and we were still enjoying ourselves.

La Mama

Multiple Locations

I don’t often recommend chains when I suggest restaurants, but I really enjoyed La Mama. When I mentioned to a local friend that I thought it was good, in spite of being a chain, he told me even locals really enjoy La Mama because they serve traditional Romanian food. This great place is a great starting point if you’ve never tried Romanian food before, as they have menus available in English as well as Romanian, and the friendly waitstaff is happy to explain menu items to you and make suggestions.

La Mama was where I first tried sarmale, the dish pictured below. Sarmale is a classic Romanian dish. This version features minced pork stuffed inside cabbage leaves. Other versions use grape leaves rather than cabbage, but I much prefer cabbage.

Sarmale is often served with polenta, cream, and fatty bacon. It is one of my favorite Romanian dishes!

Beca’s Kitchen

Strada Eminescu Mihai 80,Sector 2 //+40 744 344 700

If I had to suggest only one restaurant for you to try while visiting Bucharest, it would have to be Beca’s Kitchen. This cozy small restaurant has an ever-changing menu featuring whatever is in season at the moment. The owner, Beca, is passionate about good food, and this excitement comes through as she explains her menu.

The menu edges towards healthy without focusing on it entirely- dishes like fresh fish and locally sourced vegetables and vegan soups so delicious you’d swear they are loaded with butter.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (7)

If I had to suggest one dish, it would be whatever Beca recommends as she explains the menu to you. The menu is updated almost daily, and during our multiple visits, her suggestions were always spot on.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (8)

Costelaria

Strada Calea Rahovei Nr. 147-153// +40 31 405 5095

Coetelaria literally translates to “rib place”. This restaurant is famous for serving the best ribs in all of Bucharest.

The restaurant has a large and impressive menu featuring steaks and fish, but we went for the dish they’re most known for the ribs. I shared a platter of beef, pork, and lamb ribs with a side of homemade potato chips. This perfect place is a can’t miss for any meat eaters visiting Bucharest!

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (9)

Maize

Strada Paris 61A //0745 211 234

I discovered Maize on my most recent return to Bucharest and I’m genuinely sad I didn’t know about it from my first visit. The restaurant is a farm-to-table concept focusing on new Romanian cuisine, or updated traditional recipes done very high end.

Some of our favorite dishes from the night were the seafood dishes, especially the octopus dish. Also, the catch of the day grilled over coals looked amazing. But, the best meal ordered was the steaks, by far.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (10)

The cuts were huge and perfectly seasoned and cooked. Yes, it costs a bit more than other steaks you can find in Bucharest but the quality was plainly obvious.

Also, Maize is doing really interesting work with the cheese. Romania is not known for aged cheeses, generally favoring fresh white cheeses. But Maize is trying to bring aged cheeses into the Romanian local cuisine. I recommend you to start with a charcuterie platter to try some of their creations.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (11)

They also feature a tasting menu at the chef’s table that I hope to make it back for.

Za Lokal

Calea Victoriei 214 // +40 31 425 3110

When more than one local told me Za Lokal had the best burger in town, I knew I had to go. The burger menu is large and impressive and includes choices with beef, pork, lamb and even duck. I went for the beef burger with blue cheese and caramelized onions. The onions were cooked to the point of being sweet, a flavor that paired well with the blue cheese.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (12)

On another visit we discovered that Za Lokal isn’t just a burger restaurant- they serve excellent pastas as well. This salmon pasta in a cream sauce was delicious and surprisingly light for a dish that included cream.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (13)

Mahala

Calea Rahovei, Nr. 147-153 //+40 729 003 002

Mahala the restaurant is nearly as impressive as the great food it serves. The interior is gorgeous, and the large patio is perfect for dining outdoors on a sunny day!.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (14)

The prices at Mahala approach the higher end of what I found in Bucharest, but the food was high quality, the atmosphere was amazing, and the presentation was gorgeous. I definitely considered it worth the splurge.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (15)

Supapa

Bulevardul Mihalache Ion 23 //+40 721 212 965

Supapa advertises itself as an urban/slow food restaurant, and I definitely found that description fitting. The menu features Romanian comfort foods done well. The relaxed atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and makes you want to linger. The menu also features a nice selection of local wines and craft beers. Make sure to try one of their freshly made soups! They have really good and reasonable prices.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (16)

Lulu’s Social Bistro

Street Foisorului, Number 107, Sector 3 //+40 742 246 246

During my time at Experience Bucharest, one of our group dinners was a lamb roast at Lulu’s Social Bistro. When I saw the photos, I was legitimately upset I had missed this particular dinner. I contacted the chef, and he was nice enough to organize a separate roast dinner.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (17)

I love the patio dining at Lulu’s, and I especially love the owner- he was so friendly and fun, and he genuinely seemed to enjoy hosting big parties like this. He was very much in his element.

On a return visit, I was able to try more dishes, and they were as great as our first dinner. Definitely check this special place out, especially when it’s nice enough to sit outside, as the patio was one of my favorite features. Such an amazing experience!

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (18)

Borsalino

Bulevardul Ion C. Brătianu 44 //+40 723 721 001

When I found out there was an Italian restaurant just outside of Bucharest’s old town, the most touristic part of Bucharest, I didn’t expect much. But they were open late, and I was hungry, so I went in.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (19)

I was pleasantly surprised by how great Borsalino was. It was so good, in fact, that I went back a second time before leaving Bucharest. The restaurant features a large selection of pasta, pizzas, and antipasta. The servings were large and fresh, and the waitstaff was all helpful with making selections. If you’re in Bucharest and craving Italian food, this is definitely the place to go.

Chocolat

Strada Episcopiei Nr. 6 //+40 743 777 807

When my friends and fellow food bloggerstold me they had just had the best breakfast of their entire stay in Bucharest, I knew I had to check it out.

Chocolat has a menu so large it is almost intimidating, but on their suggestion, I knew what I was there to order: the salty breakfast.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (20)

The breakfast is huge, so make sure you come hungry for this one: your choice of tea or coffee, salad, bread, cheeses, butter, sausages, and cured meats. I couldn’t even finish!

La Cocosatu

Str. Neagoe Voda, 52A //+40 21 232 8796

This restaurant may be the most local, hidden gem of any I visited during my stay in Bucharest. A local friend recommended this great spot because it’s known as the best place in town for mici, Romanian skinless sausages.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (21)

The sausages are grilled fresh to order and served with mustard and crusty bread. During the same visit, we also ordered a peasants beef soup that was quite delicious- it tasted like something your grandmother would make for you during winter.

Shift Pub

General Eremia Grigorescu, 17//+40 21 211 2272

When I think of a pub I think of something a bit more hole in the wall than this place, which is modern and almost trendy. The menu includes pasta and steak dishes and also this porkchop with brûléed apples that I tried.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (22)

All of the portions are generous and the friendly waitstaff is happy to help you with the menu.During good weather try for a seat in the gorgeous garden. The restaurant seems to be really popular with locals, which is always a good sign.

Blue Margarita

188 Mihai Eminescu Street //+40 770 944 822

During my return visit to Bucharest I was able to check out Blue Margarita, which had opened since I was last in town. Thinking it was a Mexican restaurant I soon found Blue Margarita does much more than just Mexican food. The restaurant also focuses on South American cuisine, like this traditional Brazilian stew that I tried.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (23)

The menu is updated interpretations of traditional South American dishes. The young chef is creative and passionate and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into his menu.

The restaurant also offers a selection of Mexican dishes which were executed very well. I especially liked the chicken enchiladas I tried.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (24)

Also, we heard rumors of a special gourmet burger not found on the menu that the chef will make if you order in advance. I hope to make it back to try it soon!

The Artist

Calea Victoriei 147 // +40 728 318 871

And finally, one last restaurant I was lucky enough to dine at. The Artist is one of the most popular restaurants in Bucharest and can be difficult to get into. Local friends advised me to call well in advance. Fortunately, the second time I was in town, they had a table open.

The Artist has a standard menu to choose from- appetizers, main course, and desserts. My friend and I, however, chose to go for their spoons tasting course. This is where you are served with one perfectly presented spoonful of each of the offerings from either their appetizer or main courses. We chose to do both.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (25)

12 courses, each like small works of art, were delivered to our table. We sampled everything from trout and sea bass to foie gras, sous vide chicken, jumbo prawns, lamb, Wagyu beef, octopus, and more.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (26)

While definitely a special occasion or treat yourself a meal at a fine dining spot, I highly recommend it. It was as delicious as beautiful. Remember to call well in advance to ensure a reservation.

Caru Cu Bere Restaurant

Strada Stavropoleos 5, București 030081, Romania // +40726282373

Architecturally notable Romanian restaurant with wood paneling, stained-glass windows & a patio. Indeed an authentic place, and they are very flexible regarding the dishes. Everything is nicely cooked and served, and for meat lovers, this is heaven.

The bar right in the middle is charming to look at, and there is a traditional Romanian folk dance periodically that really excites the atmosphere.

The bread bean soup was very lovely, the glazed pork was delicious, the steak was perfect, and the dessert was amazing. Try the local beer and wines by the glass.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (27)

For starter, I recommend the peasant’s platter for sharing with smoked pork collar neck, smoked pork fillet, pleșcoi sausages, hatchet pork sausages, pork fat with garlic flavor, telemea cheese, pressed cheese, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and olives.

The oven-baked veal fillet, glazed with butter and aromatic herbs, beef tongue cooked in brown sauce, served with mashed potatoes with horseradish and baked on the stove vegetables flavored with butter and garlic, is an amazing treat for your soul.

Seoul Restaurant

Strada Aviator Mircea Zorileanu 89, București 012054, Romania // +40216672119

Very friendly, charming and peaceful Korean restaurant located on a little street, where you wouldn’t expect to find a place like this. The food is delicious, and the staff is friendly, pleasant and helpful.

Definitely, a must-try, there is the Korean BBQ vita which is Beef marinated in sweet sauce. The price includes lettuce leaves, hot peppers, garlic, cucumbers, carrots, sesame oil, pepper and sauce.

The Bulgoghi is a very popular Korean dish made from meat with vegetables and rice in a sweet sauce. The food itself is tasty, with plenty of flavors, albeit sometimes a bit heavy on oil or salt.

For dessert, try out the Mochi. It is a delicious and extremely popular dessert. It has a soft texture, the coating is made of rice, and the filling is filled with strawberries and whipped cream.

Zexe Restaurant

Bulevardul Aviatorilor 40, București 011863, Romania // +40732232424

Super good food, starting from the starters to the desserts. A wealthy interpretation of Romanian aristocratic tradition and dishes from a century ago.

We had the lamb, all the sausages, the pork filet, the meatballs and all deserts and we loved all of them. Well cooked, delicious and well priced.

The ciorba de burta is the perfect hot and heartwarming starter. It is a perfect blend of meat and vegetable. You can season it with a slice of lemon for a better taste.

21 Best Bucharest Restaurants | Where to Eat in Bucharest (29)

The staff is simply fantastic, and the ambiance is very romantic, and you feel like you are part of an old Austrian-German love story. At the same time, the staff and the whole concept are made to treat you like a royal. Absolute interesting place to visit!

Kaiamo Restaurant

30A, Strada Ermil Pangratti Street, București 011884, Romania // +40722202204

The restaurant is located on the famous Ermil Pangratti Street, in the capital city, which is the part with a historical mist of artistic scenery. In the past, there was the location of all art galleries. Therefore, comes the artistic soul of the restaurant, which can be felt through the elements of the design, the modern art pieces, the ethnic reinterpretations, the crockery and the cutlery simultaneously.

We had the nine-course tasting menu, which delighted and surprised us with good technique, phenomenal flavors, some lovely evocations associated with the dishes, and everything paired with exclusive Polish wine.

They have interesting names on the menu that represent their culture and other countries’ cultures, too. The “SLAVA UKRAINI” dessert, which manifests solidarity, is extremely delicious Chamomile tea mousse, sour cherry gel, white chocolate, and cereal crumble. Perfect to end your meal with!

Travel writer and owner of the blog. My work has been featured on Fodors, Eater.com, International Living, and Great Escape Publishing, among many others. My story? Nearly six years ago, I left my job at an Oklahoma City law firm and embarked on a journey around the world. At the time, I thought I would only be gone for 6 months, but the more I traveled, the longer my bucket list became. Flashpacker describes how I travel. Rather than traveling as the normal world wise backpacker and staying in hostel dorms, I prefer a more comfortable experience, and typically stay in private rooms, take Ubers instead of taxis, and now use asuitcase instead of a backpack. Foodie, on the other hand, describes one of the key reasons why I travel. I love to pick a central “base camp” and then explore the surrounding area, really immersing myself in the culture and interacting with the people, and enjoying and exploring the food of an area is an essential part of this experience.
